Tea Battle for the Vault - 2023

Some teas are instant hits, classics that sell year round, or just the right blend. Other teas... are more like one hit wonders, under appreciated, or just not that well known. Here at the tea girl laboratory, I am always evaluating the tea selection to make sure the blends on offer are not only tasty, but also popular with you, the customer.  When a tea needs to retire, either permanently or for the season, it heads into The Tea Vault. This allows all the teas ever made to still be available for purchase, on a blend to order basis, while freeing up space for new or seasonal blends in the regular rotation.

Every year a handful of teas head to the vault. That time is now! I have put together a list of 10 teas that are up for elimination. This year, you can help decide which teas stay out of the tea vault - and which might be locked away!

The winners - and losers - will be chosen in a Round-Robin battle for your love! Out of each pairing, you pick which one you would vote to stay, and which one you would have sashay away! The more times a tea is chosen, the more chance it has to stay in the regular collection.

All participants in the tea battle are entered to win a 50 g bag of the tea they championed! Battle runs until Feb 20th 2023. Winner contacted by email, no cash value.

Meet the Teas:

Honeybush Earl Grey - Herbal - Buy This Tea

A sweet twist of bergamot infuse this organic honeybush herb to make a caffeine free version of a classic Earl Grey. Light with floral fruity notes. This Honeybush blend sips more like a black earl grey and takes milk well, without an herbal aftertaste. Honeybush (Cyclopia) is a flowering plant native to the Eastern Cape of South Africa. Named for the mildly sweet, honey-like aroma of its golden-colored blooms, honeybush has long been used as an ingredient in soothing herbal teas. It is closely related to rooibos.

Princess Peach - White Tea  - Buy This Tea

Move over Mario! No need to be saved from this delicious tea of Pai Mu Tan white leaves, sunflowers, peach and raspberry flavours with freeze dried peach and raspberry jewels.  The peach flavouring brings out the natural peach undertones of the Pai Mu Tan, and the raspberry gives a nice sweet berry finish. The flavouring is subtle and smooth, and allows the natural tea flavour to carry the infusion. This tea makes a great light iced tea for hot summer days, or a good base for a white wine sangria!

Japanese Cherry Rose - Green Tea  - Buy This Tea
Cherry blossoms bloom en masse in Japan throughout the month of April and symbolize the Japanese term 'Mono no aware' or the awareness of impermanence. The blossoms are beautiful and brief, only lasting a few weeks. This tea is a blend of the cherry flavour of the fruit of the trees in combination of rose to represent the blossoms of the cherry. It is all based on a spring Sencha leaf.

Lavande de Provence - Herbal  - Buy This Tea
Rooibos with the fruity and floral flavours of Provence, France. A good balance of dry wine like fruit flavours and floral finishes. I have used elderberry flavour which gives a mature sweet, but slightly dry flavour to the cup and the highest quality lavender and rose blossoms to brighten the colour and floral aromas. The result is an infusion that is simultaneously both berry and floral.

Mountain Berry - Black Tea  - Buy This Tea

Jammy black currant and bright tart raspberry flavours are paired with an Indonesian tea from the Santosa Estate in Java, with added raspberries and blackberry leaves. The added fruitiness works with the teas natural rich berry flavour. This tea reminds me of a classic Canadian blend of black currant tea. I have taken an Indonesian tea with fruity notes and paired it with black currant and raspberry flavours for a juicy tart infusion. The tea is a great iced tea as it is refreshing and quenching. The smell alone makes you want to brew a cup right away!

Strawberry Rhubarb Pie - Black Tea - Buy This Tea

A tea that smells and tastes like a fruity strawberry rhubarb pie! Black Indonesian tea with natural jammy flavours pairs perfectly with the added fruity vanilla flavours. When we first started flavouring tea, I wanted to bring exciting flavour combinations to really good tea. Rhubarb is not a common tea flavour, and I have not seen any other black tea with this combination. The base of Indonesian tea, makes an amazing iced tea, and the jammy flavours pair perfectly with the natural aromas of the tea. With a splash of milk it really brings out the creamy vanilla aromas and adds depth to the blend.

Walnut Truffle - Green Tea - Buy This Tea

Fine Japanese sencha and bancha blended with rose blossoms, jasmine blossoms and safflowers, caramelized with creamy walnut flavours. Sweet caramel flavours are not usually paired with green tea, but the rich buttery notes of the Japanese tea gives a great base for this creamy flavour combination. The walnut plays off the caramel to give just a hint of woody depth and the rose lightens the aroma.

Cold Ninja - Herbal - Buy This Tea

A simple, yet strong blend of lemongrass, lemon balm, and chopped ginger root. Helps fight colds and make them disappear! This is a lovely herbal blend.  Not only are the flavours warming and spicy, but the blend is great for soothing cold symptoms and helping with cold air hydration. The blend is very simple, with no added flavours but it gives you all you need in a lemon-ginger tonic.

Rose Congou - Black Tea - Buy This Tea

Congou is a description of a Chinese black tea used by the 19th century English tea traders. The etymology of the tea is the same as 'kung fu' from the Chinese for "skill", as the tea was said to be made with careful skill ("gongfu") to produce thin, tight strips without breaking the leaves. This flowery brew blends a superior FOP (Flowery Orange Pekoe) which has been scented with rose petals as well as natural flavoring. Fragrant, flowery, and eminently shareable.

Tonic of Revitalization - Herbal - Buy This Tea

An all natural thirst quenching herbal blend of licorice root and tart hibiscus with a light mint finish. Bright cherry red infusion with a sweet juicy flavour with a spearmint aroma. This blend is all natural blend with no added sweeteners or flavour. The hibiscus has natural tartness loaded with vitamin C and the licorice root is naturally sweet which makes the infusion a prefect refresher. The mint makes it lightly cooling and soothing. The blend is a great day time blend for keeping you hydrated and healthy in any daily activity.
