The Tea Girl Story
Tea has always been part of Sarah “Teagirl’s” life, ever since her grandmother’s kitchen, where a pot of Twinings Earl Grey was always on the stove. During college, Sarah’s passion for tea deepened, and she became known for her ever-present stash of loose-leaf tea, earning her the affectionate nickname “Teagirl.”
With a dream to carve her own path in the tea industry, Sarah immersed herself in hands-on learning and field experience. She started her journey at Steeps Mount Royal Village in Calgary in 2003. From 2004 to 2010, she played a key role in shaping the Oolong Tea House brand, and later the Steeps brand. During this time, she managed the Steeps wholesale warehouse and helped establish a second Oolong Tea House location. In 2011, Sarah earned her Tea Sommelier certification, even teaching the certification course at Bow Valley College. Her passion for tea took her to the heart of tea production in Sri Lanka and China, where she gained first-hand knowledge of the industry.
In 2010, Sarah became the independent owner and operator of Steeps on 124th Street in Edmonton. Three years later, she rebranded the location to The Tea Girl, transforming it into a community hub for tea lovers while expanding her online presence. In 2016, the store grew into a larger space with more seating and a full kitchen to offer freshly baked treats.
By 2018, Sarah had taken on the unique challenge of becoming Edmonton’s only local tea blender, crafting and flavoring her own line of teas. Although the brick-and-mortar store closed in December 2018, The Tea Girl continues to thrive as an online retailer. Customers can explore Sarah’s carefully curated tea collection through her website or find her teas stocked at select retailers throughout Edmonton and the surrounding areas.
While there is no physical store at this time, The Tea Girl is fully committed to offering the best tea experience online and through local partners. Who knows what the future holds—perhaps a warehouse space one day—but for now, you can find Sarah’s unique blends just a few clicks away.
