 滇紅 (Diān hóng) Dianhong

Dianhong refers very generally to the black teas that are produced in the Yunnan province. The word “Dian” is an old term for the ancient kingdom established by the Dian people, in present day Yunnan. Hong is the term for ‘red tea’ in China. Black tea production in Yunnan began only after the Japanese invasion of China in 1938 when China lost access to the black teas produced near coastal regions because they were meant originally for export.

A tea grown at high altitudes in Yunnan from Assamica plants which produce large buds and leaves. The long buds are plucked with 2 leaves and a short stem. The oxidation produces golden hues from the new buds along with an equal mix of dark black leaves. The aroma of the dried leaves is of spice and fresh herbs. Once infused the infusion remains light with low malt, complex flavours typical of Yunnan, with lingering spice, like cinnamon.
