滇紅 (Diān hóng) Dianhong
Dianhong tea, whose name derives from “Dian” (the ancient name for Yunnan) and “hong” (meaning “red tea”). Its production began in 1938 in Fengqing County, Lincang, when Japan’s invasion cut off access to coastal export teas, prompting a shift to Yunnan’s remote, high-altitude tea gardens. The tea is crafted from the unique Fengqing large leaf tea variety (Camellia sinensis var. assamica), which was officially recognized as a national excellent tea tree cultivar in 1984. This varietal, thriving in the region’s high-altitude ecological estates and unparalleled biological diversity, is characterized by its thick leaves, high tea polyphenol content, and potent polyphenol oxidase activity.
The distinct quality of the Fengqing leaf gives Dianhong its signature appearance of a long golden bud accompanied by two leaves, and complex profile. The aroma is a captivating blend of high aroma, notes of spice and fresh herbs, while the taste is profoundly mellow and smooth, lacking the astringency common in other black teas. The flavour is complex and layered, typically featuring low malt and lingering spice notes like cinnamon, cementing its status as a world-class black tea.
