珠茶 (Zhū chá) Pearl Tea / Gunpowder Tea
A traditional strong Chinese green tea from Hunan province. Gunpowder tea is also known as Pearl Tea or Bead tea (珠茶) as each leaf has been rolled into a small round pellet. The origin of the English term may come from the tea's similarity in appearance to actual gunpowder: greyish, dark pellets of irregular shape used as explosive in early firearms. Gunpowder tea production dates back to the Tang Dynasty 618–907, and is one of the original traditional teas from China. The tight rolled leaves that unfurl in almost an explosion in the cup and a strong distinctive taste when brewed. This tea has a classic infusion with light bitterness and clear cup. The tea is best brewed at a lower temperature between 70°C and 80°C for short 1-2 min infusions.
