Hot or Iced – Just Like a Café

Matcha has become one of the most requested drinks in cafés across Canada—and for good reason. It’s smooth, energizing, and packed with flavour (and antioxidants). Whether you're a seasoned matcha lover or new to the world of green tea, here's how to make a café-style matcha latte at home with ease.

Why Size Matters

A good matcha latte is all about balance: enough matcha to get that vibrant, rich flavour, but not so much that it turns bitter. I recommend keeping it simple with just one size for each drink:

  • 12 oz (355 mL) for a hot latte
  • 16 oz (475 mL) for an iced latte

These sizes give you just the right amount of matcha in a single serving and help keep your drink tasting its best.

🌿 Hot Matcha Latte (12 oz)

What You’ll Need:

  • 4 scoops of matcha (using a “perfect matcha spoon” – about 4.4g total)
  • 150 mL hot water (70°C / 158°F)
  • 150 mL milk of your choice (warmed to 60°C / 140°F)
  • 1 tsp (5 g) sugar (or to taste)

How to Make It:

  1. Sift and whisk your matcha in a small bowl with the hot water until smooth and frothy.
  2. Stir in the sugar to dissolve.
  3. Warm your milk separately and froth if desired.
  4. Pour milk over the matcha mixture in your mug.
  5. Sip and enjoy!

Tip: Use a scale if you have one—it makes a big difference for consistent results.

❄️ Iced Matcha Latte (16 oz)

What You’ll Need:

  • 6 perfect matcha scoops of matcha (about 6.6g total)
  • 130 mL room-temperature water
  • 130 mL cold milk of your choice
  • 1.5 tbsp simple syrup (or adjust to your sweetness preference)
  • 150g of ice

How to Make It:

  1. In a small bowl or shaker, whisk the matcha with water until smooth.
  2. Add in the simple syrup and stir well.
  3. Fill a 16 oz glass with 3/4 full with ice.
  4. Pour the matcha mixture over the ice.
  5. Top with milk and stir (or leave it layered—it’s beautiful either way).

Tip: Cold drinks dull sweetness, so don’t be afraid to use a touch more sugar than you would in a hot drink.

Matcha Tips for Home

  • Always use fresh, vibrant green matcha graded for culinary or latte use, like this Matcha from Shizuoka. A low quality, dull or brownish matcha won’t give you the same taste or colour. Conversely, using too high of a grade of Matcha, the flavour will be too subtle!
  • Use filtered water for best flavour.
  • Store your matcha in an airtight container away from light, air, and heat.
  • A matcha whisk, electric frother, or shaker bottle all work great for mixing.
